Classmates:

1.  Here are the 2017 New Trier Alumni Achievement Award recipients and news from NT alumni office:
Click on this link.

2.  Just a reminder, if you have moved or changed contact information, please update your profile page.
Your family news and pictures are always welcome!!

3.  Reunion???   Several of us are talking about a reunion event for 2018 - 55 yrs..Leslie Desmond has suggested we all come to Aspen. I'm in favor of that!!  Late May or early June??  Would love to get your thoughts.  It would be a very informal gathering...Depending on how many are interested and want to attend..we'll have to put an organizing group together.  Other thoughts on locations??? Back home??

4.  Facebook is still a place where many of us keep connected.  Many of us saw the note there from Jock Simpson about Jack Ryan's passing.  I'm happy to friend you...just send me a request...

5.  I'm heading back to Rome/Florence in October with one of my daughters.  I won a free trip in the annual raffle held by L'ItaloAmericano, a NY based Italian-American organization/news that's been around since 1908, featuring Italian culture, food, travel, etc.  What a surprise!!! A week in Florence and then we'lll do a week based in Siena or head to Sicily..
I'm also planning another 2 week visit just to Sicily for spring 2018.  I am working with some local (American and Sicilian) people to help sponsor the Sicilian Project - helping youngsters in Sicily to learn English and expand their future job prospects. My friend Giovanni Lanza is the president of this 501-3C organization and lives here in the Dallas area...Let me know if you'd like to learn more about it...Or better yet, come with me to see Sicily!!!

Love to you all!!!

Hello New Trier '63 Classmates:

I recently sent out a notice regarding the renewal of our New Trier Class of 1963 website on Class Creator.com.  In the last month, 19 of your classmates have donated $495.00 - which is enough for the 3 year renewal through 2022.
The 5 year renewal is another $165.00    If you would consider making a $10 donation, I'm sure we would be able to do the 5 year extension which will put us through our 60th Reunion!!!
We have one month to finish this fund raising...

Here are 2 ways to pay:

Option 1. Send your check payable to me, Sue Walker (yes, some people still write checks…)
please note somewhere on the check that it’s for "NT1963 website fund”

Mail your check to Sue Walker, 777 Custer Rd, #8-1, Richardson, TX 75080
I will verify that I've received it and can send you an electronic receipt, if you want one.

Option 2. Go to https://paypal.me/newtrier63website

Type in $10.00 or whatever amount you want to donate, and the money goes into a
PayPal account that I set up from which I’ll pay the subscription fee.

If you don’t have a PayPal account? Getting one is fast and it’s free. Just go to www.paypal.com.

As soon as we have the cost covered, I will close the unique PayPal account I’ve set up for this funding effort and will send to anyone requesting a final accounting of the contributions.

Any questions?? Let me know. I so enjoy hearing from each of you, some through our website and others via my personal Facebook page Sue Giallombardo Walker. If you are ever in Dallas area, and I’m not off traveling in Italy (Ciao!), please call me.. I’d love to see you!!

A huge thank you to classmate Tom Safran (and there were a few others who contributed also) for funding the subscription these past 7 years. He has been generous beyond measure.

Thanks again…

Aloha All!

I've written a book about growing up in Winnetka and going to New Trier. It's very personal, intimate, full of funny things that happened to me as I grew jp and incidents that happened at Sacred Heart and New Trier. I wrote it under the pen name of Ben Archer. Its title is: From Here to Puberty and is available at Amazon.com. Here's a link to the book on Amazon:  https://www.amazon.com/Here-Puberty-Midwest-Catholic-Church-ebook/dp/B07P324JST/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=From+Here+to+Puberty&qid=1574530807&s=books&sr=1-3

Fred James -- I looked for your book in the Boston area library system, but sadly it is not there! It would be nice to make this book available to NT grads all over the country in libraries. Is there a way for you to do this?

Not many of us live in the Pacific NW - we are on Lopez.  Great that you wrote a book.  There's so much that I don't remember about my  high school years... I think for many they were wonderful times; I was happier during college and after.  My husband and I have lived on the island full time since 2008, I had land here since 1987.  It's a thriving community that makes us feel good about how things can work well.  Would love to hear what you are doing.

Hi Sue,

I am a Luddite when it comes to all things computer, but I did send a reply, just think I did it in the wrong space.  I would love to have you visit us on Lopez when you are in Seattle with your family.  Hopefully when Covid, the smoke and our government is in a better place we'll be able to travel more easily.  What I added is that it's easier to get me on my email - sealexi@gmail.com than on this site.  I check email pretty often, not so much the NT site.  Hope all is well with you.

Hello Classmates:

I'm writing to let you know about the health situation of our classmate Kathryn Fields.  Many of us who sang in Opera Group and Sr Girls Ensemble will remember her and her amazing singing voice.. Kathryn is undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma (cancer) which has limited her ability to work.  After seeing her post on facebook and reading about her situation, I contacted her and she agreed to let me post her gofundme link.  If you want to read her post, here is the link:

I know she would love to hear from you just to encourage her through this difficult time. She currently lives in Brookline, MA and was formerly on the voice faculty at Brown Univ.

Love to all,

 My fellow Classmates,

During the recent Covid hunkering down I was more or less hanging at home day after day. So I decided to write a book about growing up in Winnetka and all the hilarious, fun, memorable and other events that I witnessed at Sacred Heart in Hubbard Woods for six years and New Trier for four. I tried to be explicitly honest about all aspects of growing up, including the newfound emotions of sex. But then we all went through this and that's why I thought you would enjoy it and compare these events in my life to yours and probably laugh very much. I wrote this book with the pen name Ben Archer. You will see yourself all through both of my books.

Then, having more time on my hands, and good reviews from readers, I wrote a second autobiography that covered 1963 to 1982. Working after New Trier, going to college, learning to fly at the U of Illinois, The Army years, getting married and becoming a radio broadcaster in Honolulu. All of this was filled with very funny characters I met and what they said to me over time. Looking back on this I think I've had a wonderful life in so many ways, especially a very funny life. The first book, covering 1953 to 1963, I  entitled From Here to Puberty. The second book, entitled This Nearly Was Mine, I used the pen name Ben Archer too. Both are available at Amazon. Plot, covers, and all sorts of more information plus pictures are on the Amazon page.

Sincerely,

Fred James

Hello everyone---I've asked permission from classmate Andy Gilmore to post this news about his daughter who has lost her home and all of her possessions due to a fire.. She is a single mom with 3 sons and is currently unemployed.. If you'd like to help I'm sure it would be appreciated. there is a gofundme link below.

*******************************
On Thursday evening, February 2nd, 2023, our daughter, a single mother and her three boys, became homeless. In the short span of 20 minutes, their house in the rural community of Naples, Maine burned to the ground. They lost everything...they barely managed to escape with the clothes on their backs. The two youngest boys...8th grade and high school...lost all their clothing, school equipment, computers, athletic gear...and the oldest boy, in college nearby, also lost everything of his that wasn’t in his dorm room at school. All of this on the coldest night of the season.

Worse, the house was uninsured and my daughter is currently unemployed and looking for work. She is a college graduate with a dual degree in finance and economics and is eminently employable, but it will still take her and her family a while to get back on their feet financially. In the meantime, she doesn’t even have her pocketbook or phone.

We’re doing everything we can to help, but we’re both elderly and live several hours away. Whatever funds you can afford to donate to the family would be greatly appreciated...thank you, and God bless!

Thank you.. Andy has a facebook page if you want to send him a note. or you can contact him through our class website..

Hi Sue,

I am sad that I will miss the Reunion. I initially said October would work best for me, and then I was presented with the opportunity to take a 17 day tour from Lisbon through Santiago de Compostela and Bilbao to Barcelona. The dates conflicted with the Reunion. It was a "toss-up" . . . Portugal & Spain or Class 60th . . . obviously the Tour won out.  I will be there with you all in spirtit and look forward to seeing all the pictures of the weekend.

Have fun - Cheers, Winnie

I just tried to upload a photo and can't quite make it work. A small window opened that shows the thumbnail and that it can be dragged to position, but all I could get it to do is appear in the upper right small window, cut in half. I would like to put it in the Master or Now window. Any clues to how to fix this??  Update: the whole picture now appears downpage, but the half picture is still in the upper right box and I can find no way to move either to the Master spot. Help?

Nancy Gore (Marcus)

Hi Sue,

I just wanted to say thank you for organizing a terrific reunion. Without you and your enthusiastic efforts there would have been no reunion. So here is a big thank you for making these re-connections possible; you gave each of us a very special trip down "memory lane". I for one have a better understanding of who I was during high school and how that figures into who I am today.

All the best.

Hugs,

Nancy Gore Marcus

I'd just like to congratulate Sue G. and all those 60th reunion attendees, whose photos I've just been admiing!  Those were the days, back in '63 and last week.  I do see Sue G. when she comes to my neck of the woods here in Italy or to Seattle where I live part time and she visits kids. And I had a fun visit with Lexi on Lopez Island in August.  We used to play violin together in the NT orchestra.  Looking at the photos makes me sorry I missed the reunion, but brings back such happy memories.  Ciao, all!
